New here just back from Dr

Hi, I'm 28 weeks pregnant with my fourth baby. I had three relatively uneventful pregnancies in the past, so this one is KILLING me. The basic run down is this: I started having contractions about a month ago. They were too frequent and persistant to equate to " normal" braxton- hicks" so I was sent to the nearest L&D to get checked out. I spent five hours hooked up to the fetal monitors, contracting regularly troughout that time. I was given two bags of IV fluid, and had an ultrasound performed to check on the baby and cevical length. The baby was fine (but had fone from measuring small, to measuring two weeks bigger than gestational age (positively certain on edd). I also had a fetal fibronectin screen (negative). I was given a shot of terbutaline to quiet the contractions and sent home. The next week my dr put me on bed rest. I know I'm terrible but that just didn't work out. I the firsy place, I had to keep working. In the second place, my family just didn't seem to get it. I think everyone thought I was being melodramatic and that bedrest was extreme. When I tolfd df he just gave me the "look" and asked what was for dinner. So, I let all these pressures (not to mention not wanting to stay in bed) keep me from dr's ordersand no surprise the contractions have persisted. My dr sent me to a major hospital last week. Again. contractions on the monitor. This time two shots of terbutaline (one didn't really work). I had another negative ffn test so was sent home (thankfully) despite being a fingertip dialated. I haven't really been to work since then with the exception of this past friday and saturday. Saturday evening, my feet were so swollen I couldn't stand up, and yesterday, my face was swollen beyond recognition (still is), and my fingers were so [puffy I couldn't get my rings off. More contractions. So I went in this am to get checked. My dr didnt do an internal exam, but my weight is up about 5 lbs. My blood pressure is up slightly but within normal range still. No protein in the urine. But I have headaches and dizziness. The dr said she was concerned about the weight gain. She told me I was " headed for toxemia" Also, the baby is now measuring very big and she thought I was at risk for a c-section. I was sent back home to rest, and am awaiting my appt at the high risk doctor tomorrow afternoon. I had teeny tiny babies before (with my ex husband) and am so stressed out. I also had some horrible news this weekend and am wondering if maybe the extreme stress is causing this?? Any advice.??? I thought I was a pregnancy expert but this is all so foreign.

I'm sorry you're going through all this - sounds stressful.

I would ask your doctor about pre-eclampsia - with the swelling and weight gain, I would think they'd want to watch you pretty closely for that.

Try and rest as much as possible. Have the doctor write your family members a note if he has to, but you really should be in bed and resting - both for your health and the baby's. Good luck!

Hi there, I bet you are worried about what you are going thru! I went thru a similar situation when I was pregnant with my twins 11yrs ago. I am now pregnant with twins again, so I am headed for it again most likely. I had the contractions that wouldn't stop so I was sent to the hospital and was given terbutaline shots also. I was lucky and my insurance covered a pump device that was attached to my leg with a catheter that would continuously pump terbutaline into my body so I wouldn't have contractions. I had high blood pressure, headaches, dizziness, nausea (so much vomiting b/c of twins) and the terb. made me shake and my heart race. I was on bedrest and luckily my mom helped all the time. My husband was no help (now he is ex partly for that reason). So I understand how it feels for family not to understand. My insurance also covered this company called Matria that helped me make sure I ate enough, weighed myself, and checked my blood pressure, and would just talk to me if I felt bad. Ask your doctor about the pump, it will keep you out of the hospital until your blood pressure is too high to stay pregnant. You won't have to keep getting shots. If you want to talk send me a message. I have 6 kids and a step-son and now on #7&8...Ginger

Re: New here just back from Dr

Hey Erin, I too am 28 weeks and on bedrest dealing with some family that doesn't understand why I need to be in bed. My husband is supportive but sometimes I think he does forget that I'm supposed to be in bed or on the couch not doing too much. I have constant contractions but not dilating. I too am getting tired of running to the doctor and am now on 5 mg of terb every 4 hours. I also have preeclampsia and sounds like that's what you have too. My doc put me on labetalol for my pressures and I also had some unneeded stress when I was first put on bedrest and I think that contributed to my problems starting. I agree with the last post. Have you doctor explain to the fam that it's necessary for your health and your baby's that you take it easy and stay on bedrest. I know with how hard the economy is now that it's hard to stay out of work for 12 plus weeks because you have to recover after the birth I'm facing that too..but with my first pregnancy I was put on bedrest around the same time and had the doc clear me to go to work and ended up on bedrest for the last month or so of the pregnancy and it affected my fmla. Hope all goes well for you!

Would it be possible for DH to go see your doctor with you? Sometimes they think we are being melodramatic or making things up, but if they hear it straight from the horse's mouth (so to speak) they tend to take it a bit more seriously). Besides, if he doesn't pick up your slack, you will be headed for hospitalized bedrest. If he thinks bedrest at home is a hardship, try having you away from home in the hospital. This is not your fault (or DH's for that matter). Your pregnancy is just needing some extra TLC right now, and some understanding is needed. Good luck!

Hey there! I am in a similar boat. I am 24 weeks pregnant, and ended up being admitted to the hospital over night because my cervix measured 2.6 and funneling. The actual end tip of my cervix is now closed and firm...and my fetal fibronectin test came back negative--Praise God! I got two steroid shots for the baby and I am now on procardia to stop labor. I am on bed rest for the next 10 weeks. My husband is in the Army and is currently in the field. My parents are taking care of my son temporarily until my husband returns. Just keep the faith...you will be okay and the baby will be okay. Try to rest as much as possible. I am trying to do the same, cause I know that once my son is back home, I might not be able to rest as much as I need to. Are you getting fetal fibronectin tests done weekly?
