Re: questions about planned c section
This will be my 4th CS due in Sept., but all mine have been different experiences. My first was after I fell to progress, it took about 2hrs after it was decided that I was not going naturally. I had already had an epidural in the L/D room while trying to labor. With my second it was scheduled for 10:30 and I delivered at 12:15, I had my epidural and cather.. placed while in the L/D room. With my 3rd CS, I went into labor naturally about 7 days before my scheduled CS and 12 day before my EDD. I got to the hospital about noon and after deciding that it was true labor I delivered at about 5:30. I received my epidural/spinal combo and cather in the OR. I delivered at the same hospital with all three but with different O/Bs. My waiting time on the first two was for an operating room to open up. If you are scheduled for a CS and not in labor you can get bumped for the more pressing situations. With my third, we were waiting for the doctor to finish at her practice. One thing that I have heard very recently is about a belly wrap, ask about it - if they do not offer it. After the surgery it will help hold you in and support your body while it heals. Hopes all this helps.

Re: questions about planned c section
Hi Teresa. This will be my 2nd planned section in June. I remember it taking a LOOOONG time that morning. I was at the hospital by 7am, and DS wasn't even born until 12:15pm or so. We ended up sitting in the prep room for about an hour and a half, then getting moved to the acutal room before surgery where the nurses did the IV, monitoring, catheter, etc. It was a good hour again before the anestheseologis did the spinal. The spinal was without a doubt the ODDEST feeling in the world. It didn't hurt per se, but it was a little bit uncomfortable. It doesn't last too long, but I remember one of the effects was becoming very VERY emotional and shaking all over, teeth chattering and no amount of blankets could warm me up. This time I know that's coming so I feel more prepared. I will be bringing my ipod with movies and things loaded on to watch so time will go much faster. I definately recall sitting around for a LOOONG time waiting for one thing or another. My advise is to come prepared to wait a bit before you make it into the actual OR. Good Luck.

Re: questions about planned c section
These are my 4th and 5th children, my first was late and they tried to induce me with Cytotek (similar to cerividil). She did not tolerate labor well and after they broke my water and found merconium I started getting sick, she was estimated to be about 9lbs. Once her heartrate started fluctuating, they decided to do an emergency c-section, I was actually happy just to have it over. I was definately scared because they did not allow anyone in the room with me, just a ton of doctors and nurses, and I was only 17 at the time. My second was born 20 months later, she was scheduled but decided to come two days before that so she ended up being another emergency c-section but her dad was there with me and that helped. my third was 15 months later and she was scheduled..... it was very relaxed, we had my last meal, went to a late movie and then got to the hospital after midnight.... they started the blood work and everything else and then it was just waiting... i think i agree with the other mom who said expect to wait a long time and then if you don't you can be happily surprised. i definately experienced the shaking, gitters, chills and anxiety as well, but it passes. this time i have no idea what will happen with twins, but i am planning to get fixed during the operation. let me know if you need anything.

Re: questions about planned c section
My first was a scheduled csection because he was frank breech. I arrived at the hospital at 6am on the day I was scheduled, I signed papers and went to the "prep room" where I got my cath and was hooked up to a fetal monitor just to find out those horrible braxton hicks contractions I thought I was having were the real thing. Long story short, Ethan was here at 8:01 am. I was there 2 hours, and busy most of the time until my little boy was out, quickly cleaned, handed to my husband who was allowed to, sort of, lay my baby on my chest and pose for pictures taken by my anestegiologist.
About the time spent in surgery, it seemed quick to me. Right after I was prepped and cathed and ready to go, my OBGYN came in talked for just a minute, prayed with my husband and I and went to scrub in. I was then directly taken into surgery, moved to the surgery table, and got the spinal. The only think I remember about that is them telling me to keep leaning over (which is hard to do with a big fat belly). I did get really cold and shakey, but I just thought it was nerves. They kept making sure I was numb and they asked if I was ready for the Dr to start the surgery, I said yes, and he kind of laughed and said that he had already started. I was in and out of surgery in about 25 minutes with internal stitches, not staples. By 8:30 I was in recovery with my baby in my arms.
I had a wonderful experience...until the epideral worn off...
I am scheduled for my 2nd csection on November 16 and am ok I with it I guess. The worst part for me was the recovery. But in the end, it is all worth it!

Re: questions about planned c section
that is totally up to your family i just turned 34 and wanted another one at the age of 33 and i do agree you are young and might want another one in the future and there are a few birth controls that can you can take that can last a few years and decide later

Re: questions about planned c section
I had a c-section and it was not as bad as people make it out to be. I am actually glad that I didnt have a vaginal birth. My recommended recovery time was 10-12weeks. I recovered much sooner and didnt have complications, although I excercised throughout my pregnancy and gained the proper amount of weight made a huge difference. My experience having a c-section was not a bad. I recommend that you wear a wrap 3 days after the birth or tight fitting underwear to form the stomach that helps alot.

Re: questions about planned c section
for me...you're right about the c/s not being as bad...it was much worse. I chose a VBAC for my second and was out of the hospital--w/no stitches/staples, no side effects from the procedures/medications associated with major surgery, no pain pills, and no fears of surgical complications-- in under 24 hours. Having had both a c/s and a vaginal and comparing them it is not even close. Regardless of how quickly you recover from c/s it is still surgery and takes much longer and is much more traumatic to the body then a natural vaginal delivery.

Re: questions about planned c section
I'm having my 3rd c/s, the other 2 ended up being planned b/c they both were breech coincidently. I agree with the teeth chattering 'cause it's cold and anxiety getting the best of ya. The 2nd one was painful more so right after she came out due to what was called "afterbirth pains' which no one warned me about, so I thought I was about to have a major complication but they (drs) were not phased or alarmed which calmed me down a little and the pain killers did eventually work (had to wait for the epidural to wear-off)while in the "recovery room". It is a pain that intensifies apparently after each delivery and so with that and the natural recovery we are familiar with was somewhat a challenge initially but my baby was fine and in the end that is what mattered most to me, SO this time I am trying to prepare myself for those "afterbirth pains" as I am scheduled to deliver in Sept. BOth times, the c/s was scheduled to take place for 8am and by 10:30am, they were out of my stomach & busy being wieghed by the nurse. SO, do bring an Ipod and understand you may be doing some waiting but they will be busy with prepping you from the time you arrive with a catherer, epidural(last part of prep), heart monitor for you and baby,IVs and the other part of it is waitng to go in OR. But yall have me nervous with some of you describing the baby came b4 the scheduled "planned" c/s date. THis pregnancy/baby already has been different from the other 2,so is she gonna "cooperate" and wait until the schedule c/s or surprise me; has me neeeeervousss!!!since I obviously never experienced labor b4 with the other 2. Anywayz, hope that helps.

ditto to that! I never want to have another csection since I know what a vaginal delivery is like!

Re: questions about planned c section
I am going for my third C at the end of Oct. Everyone has different experiences but my second c section was planned and wonderful. I was very relaxed. Healed quickly, etc. I would not have done it and would not do it any other way! Think positively, relax and enjoy your birth experience. It is so diff. than the first time around. My first was emergency so very different. Best of luck!

Re: questions about planned c section
I'm scheduled for a second c-section in January. My first was 14 months ago, and my new O.B. (I didn't get along with my last one!) has told me he'd rather me do another section since it'll have been less than 2 years between them, and for whatever reason, having a vbac so close would increase my risk of complications. Whatever, I could argue, but to be honest, I'm not as worried as I was with my first one. I did NOT want a c-section, I wanted a natural birth. I fought being induced, my o.b. was a real b!tch! She bullied me and threatened me, and I always felt so helpless in her "service"! I went ten days post due, and after continuing to refuse an induction, she told me my baby was too big, and at risk for dying (nonsense). I opted for an elective c-section , as the only other option from chemical induction (my baby was nowhere near 0 station, I was 0 effaced, 0 dilated, and she estimated it would take a few days to get me into active labor after cervix ripening, etc...) so much to my dismay I had a c-section, expecting it to be terrible. It wasn't! My son weighed exactly nine pounds, and came out pink and screaming! My DH even got to cut the cord, which we thought might not happen since we were in an o.r. He held the baby just a few inches from me as they sewed me up, so the baby never left my sight. I was in and out of the o.r. within 30 minutes, got to hold and nurse my son within 45 minutes of delivery, was walking within 22 hours, left the hospital 48 hours after delivery, had no problems at all! I was completely out of pain within a week, took pain medication for only 5 days, was driving my car within a week, and suffered no long term pain or problems at all! I even have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to my bedroom and bathroom, and I had no problems at all doing that! My scar is barely visible, maybe 2 or 3 inches wide, and below the pubic hairline. All in all, despite still wishing I'd just waited for my baby to be ready, and had a vaginal birth, my c-section was not a bad experience. Because of that, I'm not at all worried this time around. I'm looking forward to the same experience as my first delivery, minus all the stress and anxiety of having a doctor I dislike, and being backied into a corner in regard to my treatment options. Of course I still acknowledge that a vaginal delivery is the quickest and easiest thing for both mom and baby MOST of the time, my experience with a c-section was not as bad as I'd heard. I'll be doing it again!

Re: questions about planned c section
I had an emergency c-section with my first and it was a horrible experience. I wouldn't dialate past 4cm on pitocin, the epidural or spinal didn't work so I had to be knocked out completely to have my baby. DH couldn't be in there with me and I was out of it for 3-4 hours after my DD was born. I HOPE that it is much different this time. I have a new dr and a new hospital this time. I am not even sure if I can have a VBAC and I am not even sure if I want to do it that way. It scares me to have to push out a baby.
