VBAC

Until recently, women who delivered via c-section had to deliver all subsequent children the same way. But now, an increasing number of women are having VBAC, or a vaginal birth after cesarean. Check out this message board to meet other women who have had a VBAC and those who are considering it.

HI All!! Going for a VBA2C (would be 2nd VBAC though) In DEC....

A little history... Nov 18th 1997 had an emergent C/S with DS1. He was premature and I was forced into labor for a low fluid test... was down to 4 when 7 is low normal... It was a VERY hard recovery... I became infected.. and I was in a lot of pain... I became preggo again... almost immediately.. Being due Jan 99.. 5days before my due date.. my new doc decided to induce me because baby was showing big on U/S.. He was allowing me to VBAC! I delivered vaginally after 24 hours of labor m(Jan 13th 1999)... I did rip/tear internally out the birth canal.. he was 9 1/2lbs... but it was not as difficult as my C/S and I was sooo happy to get that chance of a natural delivery... I lost one at 9wks in 04-04... thought i couldn't have anymore... then miraculously... i became preggo again last year... at 27wks i returned to my previous VBAC doc... (the ONLY VBAC doc in 3 counties...!!!)  Baby showed of "normal" size for most of pregnancy until last U/S they said she was around 9 lbs... Doc broke my water at 5:30pm on 11-17-08... I needed no drug intervention until about midnight... then baby hr dropped below 50 and was not going back up... even with changing of positions.. so he called for a C/S.. I was sooo scared.. but agreed... She had her cord wrapped around her leg 2times!!! AND she weighed 10lbs 2.4 oz!.. I am preggo again... due 12-24-09.. and am hoping/praying to try for another VBAC... everyone is saying I am crazy!! I don't care.. I think that I can do it!! Any thoughts would be nice.. thanks for listening...

Congrats on your pregnancy!  Have you found a doc that will let you vba2c?  I'm curious since I know a lot of hospitals shamefully won't even allow vbac at all!  As far as uterine rupture, your chances of it only go up VERY minimally after 2 c/s :)  I hope you get your vba2c...I don't think you're crazy at all!

You know I am rooting for you Christy!  Are you seeing the same doc?  Is he ok with VBA2C?  I know what hell you went through to find a doctor last time since I helped you look.  If your crazy than I am too, because if I was having anymore children I'd be VBA2C at home.  You know I'll be cheering you all along the way.  Keep me posted on our Nov board what's going on with this pregnancy.

    Congratulations on expecting again!

I know you said this is the only VBAC doctor in your immediate area, but have you considered maybe expanding the area that you're willing to look in, or looking into other care providers like a family practitioner or midwife? I ask because even though your doctor 'allowed' VBAC, it's pretty risky to induce labor avoidably, especially in a VBAC mom. Induction often causes distress. In a normal, healthy pregnancy, your body is not going to grow a baby too big for you to birth normally (given the right evidence based care & support). Breaking the bag of waters commits you to delivery at that time with no turning back, so that if baby does show distress there's no cushion of water for protection or option of turning off medications (which often take hours to leave the body anyways, at which point if baby is under distress there's usually not that much time to wait, but still, ykwim). There's also ways to remedy low fluid levels as well, in case that becomes a concern again.

I had a homebirth after two cesareans & no previous vaginal births. He was 9 lbs 10 oz with both hands by his head, & I didn't even tear! Just two minor labial splits from his two hands where he sort of scratched me on his way out barely worth mentioning. I attribute this to being able to push instinctively & in an upright position. I have another friend who's had two natural VBA2Cs- 10 lbs 14 oz & 11 lb 12 oz. There's a great website called www.plus-size-pregnancy.org that has tons of VBAmC stories. The site is amazing & not just for plus-sized moms! I used to have a VBAmC FAQ sticky post with lots of info & birth stories (including a VBA3C mom who had a 13+ lb baby!) but stupid PW erases posts frequently *sigh*. Definitely check out www.ican-online.org. Congratulations & many blessings!
