Gastroschisis and reaching out for someone to talk to

I just had my first appointment and discovered my baby has gastroschisis. I'm only 12 and half weeks. My heart is breaking and i'm worried. However, all things considered everything I've read has a positive lookout. My Dr. could not have been more adamant that this can be fixed and that everything will be alright. I'm reaching out as a first time parent to people who have conceived with the same condition and/or parents who are going through the same experience with their pregnancy.

HI! First off.. Breathe... My oldest neice was born with this condition. We were worried too... But Everything worked out fine... here is our story... at about 33 wks preggo my sister (who was in jail for most of her pregnancy... long story... and had no prenatal care whatsoever..)had an U/S!! The U/S found the abnormality.... (I am so glad she didn't have the U/S sooner because she doesn't care much and would have had an abortion... she had two abortions after her two oldest girls were born... 1 singleton and 1 set of twins... then gave birth to twins in 2005)

I hope I am not too blunt!

NEWAY... She was born nearly 2wks before her Due date in Oct 98 by C/S! The doctors taped her intestines to her belly and transported her to All Children's Hospital in Tampa by ambulance. She had a surgery that lasted several hours and spent 6 weeks in the NICU. She gained weight and started eating like a champ. She grew and progressed with no lasting effects from the surgery or the abnormality. She is now a very beautiful, thin and smart 10yr old. She is only 73lbs... but I try to fatten her up with pizza...LOL She does have a very cute cabbage patch belly button. She knows about her surgery and the difference in her belly button and doesn't seem to have any insecurities about it. Which I am glad! The hardest part was waiting after the birth and getting through the surgery. She only needed one surgery but we were told that some require another 1 or 2 surgeries more. SO she was lucky to only need one.

Of all the things that could be wrong... I have been told that this is considered worrisome but minor. It is totally fixable and seemed to have no long term effects. I am not sure if her thiness has anything to do with the surgery but she is the thinnest of our family out of 4older kids and 3 younger ones. So maybe.

I hope that I have helped you in some ways... did the doc explain what the condition is exactly?? iif you have any questions.. I am not a doc/nurse but I did read alot about it when it happened to our family, feel free to ask! GOOD LUCK... I am sure ur baby will be fine!

I went to school with someone who just had a baby boy who had this. He had the surgery and his belly button looks a little differently but he is now like a normal newborn. The beginning is stressful I think because they don't let the baby eat right away. So that may be tough on you. But this is something that is very fixable. Good luck and take care.
