    Progesterone question

Hi ladies. I am hoping someone can help me. I have had 3 m/c's in the past year. I had all the testing done and they didn't find anything. They just want to monitor my closely. So I am now almost 6 weeks pregnant. They have been checking my progesterone weekly. The first week it was 43. The second week, last week it was 47. This week it dropped to 35.6. Which is still good for the first trimester. The nurse said it's normal for it to fluctuate like that. Has anyone ever heard of progesterone fluctuating at all? She also said the Dr. is still optimistic. I will get it re-checked next week. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It should be going up.  Baby can't produce that until betwen 9-12 weeks.  As soon as i get a bfp i am put on progesterone to prevent a m/c.  Thanks to it i have three healthy babies.  Good luck and be persistent!!

Have they thought about putting you on a supplement?  I take 200mg Prometrium orally every night just as a precaution because I've had three miscarriages and have borderline low progesterone.

    Re: Progesterone question

Thanks girls. I don't know why the nurse said its normal to fluctuate. I just know its supposed to keep going up. I pushed for the progesterone early on and they wanted to see where it was first. And it is on the high side for now. I would just like to be able to do something instead of wait for it to drop to a dangerous level. If it drops next week I better get something. Otherwise I will have to switch doctors I guess. I also see a specialist due to the three m/c's. He doesn't even believe that progesterone supplements help so he really isn't much help at all. Its my regular OB thats been watching it so closely.

    Re: Progesterone question

I had two miscarriages due to low progesterone in between my first and second child. Due to this, as soon as I get a positive pregnancy test I start on the prometrium right away. My doctor says it doesn't do any harm & it has worked like a charm for me with two successful pregnancies! I don't have any information on the actual levels for you but I think you should get a second opinion right away. Both of my losses were at 6 weeks...

    Re: Progesterone question

Progesterone is supposed to go up in general BUT it also fluctuates during the day same as any other blood work and depending on the lab which tests the levels. If your progesterone dropped by 10 points then the Dr should run another test as a precaution and if anything put you on supplements. In the past, I had 1 m/c at 9 weeks which was assumed to be because of progesterone issues. Started at 13 and then the Dr (which I dropped) back then had me on Prochieve 8% and tests came back at 18. I was 5 weeks at the time. Still, levels were too low but he didn't follow through with more tests because he saw the heartbeat and HCG levels were up. I ended up miscarrying at 9 weeks. He used the "chicken and the egg" excuse. He was too lax and didn't follow up. If there is any sign of levels not being what they should then precaution should be taken. This time around, my new obgyn put me on progesterone in oil (PIO) shots simply as a precaution from the time I found out (surprise!) I was pregnant at 4 weeks. My levels at 4 weeks (without the PIO) was 21.5 and then a few days later w/ the PIO went to 44. Now, I am 6w5d and am still on the PIO as a precaution even if I may not need it. My Obgyn told me that the PIO is offered by most and the best fertility clinics as well because the the oil is best absorbed by the body and at "uterine" level. They have shown best results. Although it is a pain in the rear (literally speaking) I would rather deal with it since it offers support. Good luck to you and be sure to follow up with regardless. Keep us posted.
