    How to go about donating?

DF and I want to donate our cord blood as we have no money to store it. Lucily we also don't have a history of disease that it cures, or helps cure.  How do we go about doing this? Everything i find online is like Viacord and whatnot, wanting me to pay.

My husband and I looked into donating cord blood too, but we couldn't find anything on line.  My midwife said that very few places will even accept it anymore because of the cost of collecting and storing it.  Mainly pharmaceutical companies used to collect it for research, but now there are too many regulations and tests that would have to be done first.
We didn't want to pay to bank it for ourselves, but even if we wanted to donate it, the hospital would have charged us.  I feel bad that it wasn't able to be saved to help someone out, but we didn't have the money to pay to donate it.

here are a few sites I found on yahoo under cord blood donations there are many more.

I donated my dd but I don't remember the name of the place. I filled out some paper work and sent it to them and they sent me a kit. I gave it to my doc and they collected the blood then called the place and someone came to pick it up from the hospital. oh and they took some blood from me also.

Re: How to go about donating?

We thought about donating but when we spoke with our OB, she told us that the % of survival using a donated sample is much less than using a related sample from someone in the family.  Also, since you can use the sample for anyone in the family, it would be a good insuance policy for us.

Many banks are expensive, I totally agree with that - but we did look into payment plans so now we are signed up and we only have to pay $40 a month which is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. It's just reassuring knowing that the cord blood will be there should anyone one of us come down with leukemia or soemthing.

You might be able to try harvard, they have a program, or someone at Dana Farber in Boston Might be able to help.  I'm trying to figure out if we are going to save it or put it into a general bank for people who need it.  There is a National registery for people who need and and those who want to donate.  The Red Cross may even have some info.

I donated my second daughter's cord blood throught the Brady Kohn foundation.  It didn't cost me a penny!  I don't know if they can do it in your area, but there is a lot of information on their web site that may help you.  They are VERY friendly and helpful if you want to email them with any questions!  Go for it!
