    Doc made me nervous

First off let me state that my doc as a rare one and really is great. We went over my birth plan at my 38 wk appt and he was very agreeable to everything (IV use, efm, amniotomy, pain meds, pushing in a position other than on my back, etc) that I wanted. However, we disagree on one thing. I included in my plan that I did not want to be induced. I made the comment that I would not consider even talking about it until I hit 42 wks. He said that we'd be talking about it before then b/c there is a new study out that babies need to be born by 41 1/2 wks. Anybody heard of this study? I'd like to see it for myself. Now, my history has shown that I don't really go past my edd at all so I doubt I will this time. BUT if I do I need a plan of attack. My thoughts are to let him strip membranes at 41 wks if I've not delivered by then. Then I may go home and try sex, spicy foods, castor oil, etc. I really want to avoid being Pit-ted. I just need some peeps to help me think through this and decide how to handle it if if comes down to it.

I have never heard of this!  I would demand more information from him, which you are entitled to as his patient.  It doesn't sound right to me.  I just gave birth in January and as of this month my birth center hasn't changed their timeline of which you are allowed to birth at the actual birth center.  If you are before 36 or after 42 weeks they will make you deliver at the hospital across the street, they will attend your birth and advocate for you, but it just won't be the home setting.  Anyway, I'd avoid castor oil as much as you can, it can give you symptoms of labor you might not normally have-- excess D, vomitting, worse cramps... ICK!  It doesn't sound like you will have an issue with your previous pregnancy(ies?), but he doesn't need to be adding stress to you at this time!  I know quite a few natural induction methods, to help get things moving if your body is ready to have a baby, not just force it into labor like the dreaded pitocin.  I'm sure you know all about these methods, but if you need support for doing them I'm here!! Smile

That's just crazy. "Full term" is actually considered normal up to 42 weeks! I had the same issues though during my last pg. I went ten days "past due" in the end, but at 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 days past due, I was getting the whole "scare tactic putting me on a fetal hb monitor 2-3 hours every other day" and the "you're gonna have a stillbirth if you don't let us induce" and other nonsense. Despite everything, I refused induction, (and pitocin altogether). I did end up with a c-section, but it was due to my large baby and his large head circumference, as well as my preeclampsia, so nothing to do with the fact that I refused induction. If you have a history of not going vastly overdue, I wouldn't worry about it, but regardless, your doctor can't force you to be induced. You ultimately (and legally) have the final say in your care and treatment. Stick to what you believe is right, and as long as your baby has a good heartbeat, and is moving regularly, "overdue" is just a term doctors use to put you into a catergory. The baby will come when he's dang well ready! And that's no joke, tried EVERYTHNG! The spicy foods, sex, running on a treadmill, high doses of red raspberry leaf, nipple stimulation. I stopped short of castor oil (even though my sister used it and contractions started within 3 hours, ultimately, she had a c-section too though because her baby got lodged in the birth canal) because a girlfiend of mine used it, and her baby passed a lot of meconium in utero, requring her to go to NICU after birth. I was led to believe it's a pretty common thing for castor oil to cause meconium aspiration in newborns. Good luck though, with whatever you decide!!!

    Re: Doc made me nervous

I went 12 days past due with my last baby. As far as I know midwives are still allowed to do homebirths up until 42 weeks. I was getting scared though as I was about to hit the 42 week mark! Let me just say though that my edd was off by a week, even confirmed that with the U/S but my midwife decided to keep the original and not change it?! I would have been upset if I went past the 42 week mark though. Anyhow I think what your dr said is rediculious and not true. Just another way to get more money! I say stick with your guns and hold out on induction!! My SIL was due on Sept 27th and her dr told her that if she didn't deliver by Sept 28th they were going to induce her! Cha-ching! That's exactly what they did on the morning of the 28th! The baby did turn out to be a little bit big (9lbs 10ozs) but her 1st was 9.5lbs so she just grows them large. I really despise the way labor and delieries are done with reg OB-GYN's...JMO

Don't let them strip your membranes either.  I made that stupid mistake & kick myself for it every day.  My daughter & I both got an infection from it & my VBAC turned into another c/s.
